Prudential People - Sandile Malinga, Fixed Income Portfolio Manager
Tell us why you enjoy your role at Prudential.
I’ve been with Prudential for three years and seven months. My role encompasses all of the things I love about investing. It involves a bit of watching and interpreting the market, a bit of research and idea generation, and a lot of problem solving.
A topic you’re passionate about (apart from investing)?
Education! Especially early childhood education and development. And also rugby – I’m a die-hard (and formerly long-suffering) Lions supporter.
A recent favourite read? Why did you like it?
My current favourite author is Stephen Baxter, who writes hard sci-fi, mostly set in some version of humanity’s technological future. What sets him apart is his ability to weave real-world physics and our latest understanding of the laws of nature into his novels. There is also something to be said for going through a thousand-page space opera in less than a month and being held in suspense throughout.
An ideal evening is…
Date night with Mrs Malinga!
Your most vivid memory of school is…
Having to stare down a first-team prop after having chirped under my breath! I also learned quickly that I was something of a fast sprinter when motivated.
What was your first job, and what did you learn from it?
Mowing my granny’s lawn weekly. I learned that my gran (and many women) are better negotiators than I am.
What do you do to relax?
Despite my lack of talent, I enjoy cycling. I’m trying to improve my next Argus time, so at the moment I’m focusing a lot on getting faster! I also enjoy spending time with my computer/console games (PC, PlayStation, Wii) with my daughter. I read a lot of weird and wonderful fiction as well when my insomnia strikes.
What is your number-one bucket-list activity?
Unlike traditional bucket-list items, I’ve done this one before, but haven’t had much luck in the last 15 years… I’d like to get back to making art again!
Your favourite app and why?
Whatsapp. It has revolutionised the way I communicate and has strengthened my relationship with a vast array of contacts and people in my life.
Where do you usually spend Saturday afternoons?
Wherever my girls drag me!
Beer or Champagne?
Why choose? There’s an occasion for both!
Money makes the world…
A little brighter!
Who is your hero and why?
My mom. She’s taught me all the things that make life worth living and continues to be a positive influence to everyone she meets.
If you were a superhero, what powers would you have?
Sub-atomic regeneration (which means immortality) – there are so many books, games and races to go through!
What would you like to be remembered for?
My wicked chilli con carne with green pepper salsa.
