The history of the JSE: 1950 - 2021

Certain global events, such as the “dot-com bubble burst of 2000” and the “sub-prime crisis of 2008”, had a significant impact on financial markets. But if history has taught us anything, it’s that markets have an innate ability to recover and continue to grow over time. This graph provides an interactive perspective of the events that influenced equity performance on the JSE over the past 70 years. In spite of the many “ebbs and flows”, what remains consistent is the upward trajectory of performance over time.
