The history of the JSE: 1950 - 2022

Certain global events, such as the dot-com bubble burst of 2000, the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 and the Covid-19 pandemic, had a significant impact on financial markets. But if history has taught us anything, it’s that markets have an innate ability to recover and continue to grow over time.

This graph provides an interactive perspective of the events that influenced equity performance on the JSE over the past 72 years. In spite of the many “ebbs and flows”, what remains consistent is the upward trajectory of performance over time.
